About Carlos Garcia

Art has always been a major part of my life. In elementary School, I was the kid who would draw cool cars and monsters on my notebooks, and was then enlisted to "illustrate" the notebooks of a select group of friends. In high school, the art and shop teachers often seemed to take a special interest in me.

Entering Miami Dade Community College, a career in art seemed the obvious choice. At that time, sculpture and mixed media were my first loves. But in a basic design class, a classmate would bring a 35mm camera and place it on his work table, and it seemed to have a magnetic pull on me. I became very curious of its potential for creating art. Next thing I knew I was sitting in a basic photography class, and that marked the beginning of my obsession with the medium. From there I moved to Florida State University to further explore the artistic possibilities of the camera.

Graduating in 1981 with a B.F.A. degree, a major fork in the road presented itself: the decision to either enter the job market (a.k.a. "the real world"), or continue down the academic path to a teaching assistantship and a masters degree in art. Obviously, I chose the real world, and more than two decades later, I have no regrets. I am married to my soul mate Marie (who is an extraordinary artist; see her work at Gallerie Timothy Tew ... portfolio/bio), and I have a beautiful and funny daughter named Carlie. Having a thriving successful business is just the icing on that cake.

In 1984 I opened the doors to my first studio after two and a half years of assisting and shooting at some of the busier studios in town. Business has grown progressively over the past couple of decades. So much so that my "want" for a larger studio became a "need" for one. Thus in 1990 I purchased my current facilities, located in Atlanta's photo district, just blocks away from the best pro labs and scan houses (map to studio, via Yahoo).

The studio is designed with the comfort of visitors in mind, with a conference room and client lounge adjacent to the 1600 square foot shooting area. Food photography constitutes a large portion of my work, so to accommodate that I have a very large kitchen (35 feet long) that can handle virtually any size production. And possibly the one studio feature unparalleled in the Southeast is the enormous selection of CD's for your listening pleasure, plus for those of you with the need for speed there is our "World Famous Bottomless Pot of Coffee" (espresso available upon request).

Well, that tells you about me personally, and as for my work, I hope that it speaks for itself.

Time for some name dropping?
